drawdrawdraw

I finally got back to doing some drawing this week. I'm working on a slew of projects and have a pretty intense list of commissions right now. "Moonviewing" above is my summer promo postcard for the Zapow Artist Industry Mailing. I imagine this lonely little mermaid takes the skull of her ill-fated sailor lover to view the moon nightly from the harbor of a port city.

I also have been friends with my sketchbook and pink brush pen lately...

A Unicorn Fabricated

Local artist Danielle Festa did a painting from a candid photo she took of me at the Spring Zine thing in April. I'm wearing one of my most favorite skirts made of She-ra bedsheets. The piece is called "A Unicorn Fabricated" and is on display still for the next two weekends at the Washington Street Art Center in Somerville in the Me and My Friends Make Art show.

Connecticon!

I am still recovering from one of the most enjoyable Connecticons ever.

There was plenty of photo bombing from Blake

Video By Chris Newell & Liz

And there was Doug Walker, Nostalgia Critic (who broke Connecticon with his fandom and forced back closing ceremonies for a SECOND Q&A panel because the first far surpassed capacity). Chris asked me to draw a picture of him. He originally wanted to get it signed, but ended up just giving it to him. Liz caught some video of the panel since I couldn't attend as I had to break down my booth at the same time. His acceptance of it is quite amusing- check out the video.

And there were so many wonderful costumes!!!

Someone even did a DRIVE cosplay. She said I was the only one who knew who she was. Fantastic.

Don't stop me now cos I'm having a good time!

It was a real good time.

Monster Masquerade

I had an insanely fun time at the Monster Masquerade on Sunday all dress up as a hybrid Lum-chan from Urusei Yatsura complete with fangs and horns (no tiger striped, fur bikini though ;) ). Despite the run around Davis Square Theater inflicted on this show (cancelling it only two weeks before dates for no reason other than they had a more "lucrative" show request to book with them), the show lived on at Radio Bar in all of it's velvety wallpaper goodness. My most treasured Boston bands that I've been drawing for more than a year now were all together in one amazing power packed show. There was...

Second Photo by Paisley Rojagato

Bent Knee, who were hysterical in their prize giveaway interludes where Ben and Gavin through an eclectic variety of VHS tapes gently at the audience and Miss Courtney donned a wedding dress that was fit for a zombie Ariel. Naturally, they rocked the house.

And Jaggery, who are always delicate, emotive and amazing. They closed their set with "Real Love" or "Push It" ... somehow both these songs have cross in my brain for no logical reason. Mali's horns were Brunhilde bad ass.

And finally, the wonderfully epic Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toysclosed the show with impromptu hero ballads dedicated to Radio Bar, covers of the Ghostbuster's Theme and "I Put a Spell on You." I love Meff Metal mustache (which I terribly portrayed in my drawings), Edrie's googly eyed buffalo monster costume, JoJo's "sexy knight" monster slaying costume- all so wonderful.

So much fun!!! So many great friends out too!!! What a night! :)

BizBaz N' Peal!

I've been neglecting my blog for the week and never posted about the shows I did the weekend before last, mainly Bizarre Bazaar, which was a sweet wind tunnel of hell. I rarely do outdoor shows, in fact, I think this is the only outdoor show I do. Anyway, last year was a very blissful and calm in contrast to the insane struggle this year to keep everything on my table from blowing out into the car riddled road.

In short, it is time for me to get a tent!

You can't control the wind or the tree that wants to litter all of it's blossom corpse pieces all over your beautiful ring display. I know I'm not the first to battle the elements in the midst of being a merchant: the first year I started doing this, I did a small fair in Northampton where there was a gentleman selling beautiful glass figures he made. The chief piece on his display was a gorgeous octopus which mid-day was gathered up in the table cloth that inflated like a sail with a rogue gust and smashed on the ground below. No, I can thankfully say I made it out unscathed save half my business cards blowing into the wind (free advertisement!). Anyway, next year I plan to be fully tented. :)

Kudos to those who put on the Bizarre Bazaar Union Made show! Crafty staff handed out goody bags to vendors complete with an emergency contact number in case you needed help and I was regularly check in with to see how I things were going. I <3 them.

Oh yeah and I drew Emily Peal that night too... photos of the drawings and the Monster Masquerade coming soon.

TENTS!!!!
