Mobiles linked to disturbed sleep

Using a mobile phone before going to bed could stop you getting a decent night's sleep, research suggests.

The study, funded by mobile phone companies, suggests radiation from the handset can cause insomnia, headaches and confusion.

It may also cut our amount of deep sleep - interfering with the body's ability to refresh itself.

The study was carried out by Sweden's Karolinska Institute and Wayne State University in the US.

Funded by the Mobile Manufacturers Forum, the scientists studied 35 men and 36 women aged between 18 and 45.

Some were exposed to radiation equivalent to that received when using a mobile phone, others were placed in the same conditions, but given only "sham" exposure.

Those exposed to radiation took longer to enter the first of the deeper stages of sleep, and spent less time in the deepest one.

The scientists concluded: "The study indicates that during laboratory exposure to 884 MHz wireless signals components of sleep believed to be important for recovery from daily wear and tear are adversely affected."

Researcher Professor Bengt Arnetz said: "The study strongly suggests that mobile phone use is associated with specific changes in the areas of the brain responsible for activating and coordinating the stress system."

Another theory is that radiation may disrupt production of the hormone melatonin, which controls the body's internal rhythms.

Electrosensitivity

About half the people in the study believed themselves to be "electrosensitive", reporting symptoms such as headaches and impaired cognitive function from mobile phone use.

But they proved to be unable to tell if they had been exposed to the radiation in the test.

Alasdair Philips is director of Powerwatch, which researches the effects of electromagnetic fields on health.

He said: "The evidence is getting stronger that we should treat these things in a precautionary way.

"This research suggests that if you need to make a phone call in the evening it is much better to use a land line, and don't have your mobile by your bedside table."

Mike Dolan, executive director of the Mobile Operators Association, said the study was inconsistent with other research.

He said: "It is really one small piece in a very large scientific jigsaw. It is a very small effect, one researcher likened it to less than the effect you would see from a cup of coffee."

Last September a major six-year study by the UK Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research Programme (MTHRP) concluded that mobile phone use posed no short-term risk to the brain.

However, the researchers said they could not rule out the possibility that long-term use may raise the risk of cancer.

In the UK, mobile services operate within the frequency ranges 872 to 960 MHz, 1710 to 1875 MHz and 1920 to 2170 MHz.

Unsure & Catastrophic

sounds like: "The Dress" Blonde Redhead
feels like: Photobucket feverish

I saw Blonde Redhead at the Paradise last Sunday with my friend. It was one of the best shows I'd seen in a long time. It was one of those shows where the bass crept deep into your chest and echoed around in as if you were hollow. I'd close my eyes and feel as if I was the only one in the room, engulfed in vibrations and decebals. Beautiful.

Blonde Redhead "23"

My Favorite Blonde Redhead Lyrics:

Silently

Silently, I wish to sail into your port, I am your sailor
Quietly, I drop my weight into your sea, I drop my anchor
I sway in your waves, I sing in your sleep
I stay till I'm in your life

I realize now you're not to be blamed my love
You didn't choose your name my love
You never crossed the seven seas
I realize now you're not to be blamed my love
You didn't choose your name my love
You never crossed the seven seas

Oh, sweet creature
I know exactly how you feel
Your clock is ticking, tick tack tick tack
Your heart is beating tum tum tum tum tum

Silently, I wish to sail into your port, I am your sailor
Quietly, I drop my weight into your sea, I drop my anchor

I realize now you're not to be blamed at all
You didn't choose your name my love
You die a little in my arm
I realize now you're not to be blamed at all
You didn't choose your name my love
We never crossed the seven seas
I realize now you die a little in my arm
Before you even taste my love
We never crossed the seven seas
I realize now you re not to be blamed at all
You didn't choose your name my love
You die a little in my arm
I realize now

In particular

Lying on my back. I heard music.
Felt unsure & catastrophic.
Had to tell myself it's only music.
It blows my mind, but it's like that.

Is anyone there? What could you tell me?
Afraid of what? Would you ever know?
Everyone else is really boring.
Anyone else wouldn't be good enough.

Some place safe i would imagine.
Someone new would be so cruel.
Incurable paranoiac. Hysterical depression.

Alex i'm your only friend.
Alex your love will sing for you

Inappropriate Touching;
Dirty Comics and Art Presented By the Washington Street Art Center

Opening Reception Feb 1st from 6-10pm
Feb 1-24th, Gallery Hours 12-4 Sat/Sunday or by appointment

The Washington Street Art Center presents Inappropriate Touching, a group show of dirty comics and art featuring the work of more than 20 contributors.
Ranging from self-published zinesters and emerging Boston talent to internationally exhibited artists and award winning illustrators from coast to coast, Inappropriate Touching features art and comics as diverse as they are deviant. Funny, intimate depictions of sex and relationships from local comics hero Liz Prince, weekly Phoenix contributor Karl Stevens, indie comics legend Ariel Schrag and Chicago comics fixture Jeffrey Brown, will share wall space with the juvenile gross-out gags of Vice back page creator Johnny Ryan, adult excerpts culled from cartoonist Jason Little's new graphic novel, and dark, sexually-charged Darger-esque paintings by Bonnie Dewitt, among many other offerings.

Shedding light on the entire scope of obscenity, from the playful and suggestive to the explicitly perverse, the show blurs the lines between beauty and entertainment, porn and personal narrative, high art and low-brow smut. Inappropriate Touching is bound to stimulate something.

Come check out the show at our opening reception Friday February First from 6pm-10pm, which promises to shock and awe with dirty disco and dance tracks from DJ Area D, followed by live music performances from local cosmic-punk outfit The Real Life Time Machines, dark electro-pop from Plunge Into Death, and a special appearance from filthy electro R&B duo Angela, of Brooklyn.

Curator Sarah Schoemann will also be creating a limited edition zine featuring selections from the exhibition. Pick it up at WSAC during the month of February or at fine book and comic shops throughout the city. Proceeds from the zine will go to supporting the free live music programming at WSAC.

The Washington Street Arts Center is located at 321 Washington Street in Somerville, just outside of Union Square on or near the 86, 87, 83 and 91 Bus routes. Parking is free and ample.

Zombie Romance

If you like your handmade goodies to be shrouded in intrigue, then Zombie Romance is worthy of your time. By day, Zombie Romance works in a clandestine location, performing a job that requires her anonymity on the Web. By night, she is a jeweler, an illustrator, a writer and a creative savant. Ever so resourceful, two of her favorite materials are nail polish and White-Out®. And, she is moved by Japanese culture.

“My magnetism to the culture is fueled by it’s underlying moral: Life is brief, sad and beautiful and thus should be treasured” she says. “This is expressed repeatedly in Japanese culture from spring picnics under blooming cherry blossom trees to the way items and gifts are exquisitely wrapped.”

The article makes me sound like I work for the CIA. I guess I could have been a little more specific, but I'm new at my job and it does require that my clients not be able to readily search me on the net for my safety and so I'm still wary about revealing too much information. Ah- well. I was suprised they chose me and am deeply honored.

I took my first real stab at translating lyrics... I looked up an existing translation for parts I wasn't clear on, but made sure to meticulously pick apart the words to be sure how the sentence was formed. Translation is difficult because it's open to interperatation. Some of the existing translation didn't make as much sense to me as my translation did, but only Ringo knows for sure, I suppose. Please enjoy and feel free to contact me if I have made an error. Tokyo Jihen's song "Killer Tune" can be found here on Youtube.

“Luxury is an ally.” You say, defeated, wanting more

I won, I say- this sensitivity isn’t shaking
Being poor is surely the enemy.

In being luxurious, certainly your wallet alone isn’t sufficient then
Even though, being lovely isn’t a rough feeling
Be careful of this snare.

Please look, look at me, this is the reason we met
the seasons disposable, we live thereafter
I can't steal the night or the fall
You are my whole existance

In being luxurious, certainly it is wrong if you are not jealous
Don’t stare at the slight scent
If it’s not desired

“Today is a one time occurrence?” It’s futile, there isn’t any signifigance.
Absolute beauty cannot be measured
Because it starts to overflow

Please look, we met because of this inaccessible place
Thank you for finding that out for me
I can't deceive the heavens or love
I am your whole existance

From Ron Paul's Official Website:

Thank you! (1/4/08)

Yesterday was a remarkable day for Ron Paul, and it wouldn’t have happened without you. For those of you who haven’t yet heard, Ron Paul took over 10% in yesterday’s Iowa caucus, handily beating Rudy Giuliani and finishing right behind both Fred Thompson and John McCain. This despite that Rudy Giuliani made more visits to Iowa than Ron Paul. And, entrance polls showed that Ron Paul took first place (29%) among independent Republicans!

This campaign is just beginning, and we are starting off better than anyone in the “mainstream” media imagined.

Back in February 2007, no one gave Ron Paul any chance to succeed in this race. Ron Paul did not have the name recognition of other candidates, nor the financial resources. Essentially, Ron Paul started at a level of 0% in all 50 states.

But then, as we know, something started to happen. Americans started to hear this message of freedom, and began to galvanize behind the cause. It’s no small feat that we brought in 10% yesterday in Iowa, a double-digit turnout that has brought a lot of commentary – even from Fox News!

Just last night, Greta van Sustern had this to say:

"Ten per cent is not insignificant - that's a huge number. Here you have a candidate that 10 per cent of the people caucused in his party really want him and it's not like he's an insignificant player. He didn't just drop in yesterday to the process, he has been running for president for a long time, and certainly many of the issues he's raised are rather provocative and certainly stimulate the debate; that's not a bad thing."

This election is just getting started. It’s time to mobilize and do what needs to be done. It’s time to win the most important election of our lifetime.

We can only compete in the Super Tuesday primaries and caucuses with your continued support. Help us keep this momentum going with your most generous donation today: https://www.ronpaul2008.com/donate.
